The Waukegan Community Unit School District # 60 Board of Education appointed Mr. Eric Hamilton as the new Interim Co-Principal at Waukegan High School - Brookside Campus this week.

Members of the Board of Education are dedicated to the students of Waukegan, and to the community itself. Board Members routinely attend special events throughout the school district and the community. At times a majority of a quorum of Board of Education members may be in attendance at the same event. On June 26 multiple Board Members will attend the African American Males Achievement Initiative committee meting.

The Waukegan Community Unit School District # 60 Board of Education appointed Waukegan High School students Melanie Rosales and Brianna Bravo to serve as its newest Student Board Members during its June 25 meeting. New this year, two students were selected to serve in the position, as the Board desired to have one individual represent each Waukegan High School campus.

A regular meeting of the Board of Education will be held on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at 7 p.m. for Open Session, and 6 p.m. for Closed Session. The meeting will be conducted in person in the Lincoln Center Board Room, 1201 N. Sheridan Road. Closed Session will occur in Room 120.

Waukegan Community Unit School District # 60’s annual Back to School Resource Fair is just around the corner. This year’s Fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 27 at the Waukegan High School - Brookside Campus, 2325 Brookside Avenue.

A Special Session Board Meeting to conduct individual interviews with the finalists for the Student Board Member position will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. in Room 120 at Lincoln Center. This meeting will be held in Closed Session. A brief open session with public comment will precede the closed session. No official Board action will be taken at this meeting.

District 60’s K-8 theater program, the Waukegan Performing Arts Company (WAUK-PAC) will debut its next production, Seussical Jr. later this month. Nearly 40 Waukegan students representing nine schools make up the cast and crew of the production.

On June 18, 2024, the Student Achievement and Operation Services Committee meetings will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Lincoln Center Board Room, 1201 N. Sheridan Road. No formal Board action will be taken during the meetings.

District 60’s two Family and Community Engagement Meetings – the Black Parent Network and D60 Dogs – planned for Friday, June 14 are being moved from in-person to virtual. See below for login information for both meetings.

All 24 Waukegan Community Unit School District # 60 school buildings were recently recognized by the Midwest PBIS Network for their PBIS implementation during the 2023-24 school year. Buildings recognized included all 15 elementary schools, five middle schools, the Lightfoot Early Learning Center, AOEC, and both high school campuses.

Last week our Board of Education voted to approve updates to two important policies that impact students academically. The most significant policy is the re-introduction of our promotion/ retention policy, which affects how students move from grade to grade each year, based on academic performance. Below are more details on this policy, as well as more minor changes to our grading policy. Budget Workshop # 1 for the Board of Education will be held on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. The meeting will be conducted in-person in the Lincoln Center Board Room, 1201 N. Sheridan Road.

Waukegan Public Schools’ Summer Meals program will begin the week of June 3rd at 14 school sites across the District. During the Summer Meals program, all Waukegan children, including those enrolled in the District's summer programming, are eligible to receive free breakfast and lunch. Meals are served on days in which schools are in session between June 3 and July 1, Monday through Friday.

PUBLIC NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that Community Unit School District Number 60, Lake County, Illinois (the “District”), will hold a public hearing on the 28th day of May, 2024, at 7:00 o’clock P.M. The hearing will be held at the Lincoln Center, 1201 North Sheridan Road, Waukegan, Illinois. The purpose of the hearing will be to receive public comments on the proposal to sell bonds of the District in the amount of not to exceed $30,000,000 for the purpose of increasing the working cash fund of the District.

We’re excited to announce that we will soon be opening our Wraparound Center in downtown Waukegan, where we will focus on supporting the well-being of our community. The Wraparound Center is a one-stop location for students, families, and other residents to receive therapeutic support and access to services and resources from community agencies. The Waukegan Wraparound Center is expected to open with a limited rollout later this month. We are partnering with our direct service providers, A Safe Place and CYN Counseling Center to create a nurturing and empowering environment where families can access the resources they need to thrive.

The meeting will precede the Board's regular monthly committee meetings.

Waukegan High School will host its 151st commencement exercises on Friday, May 17 at 5:30 p.m. at Weiss Field. An expected class of more than 900 students will make up the Waukegan High School’s Class of 2024.

District 60 is offering students entering grades 8-12 an opportunity to attend a series of free financial education classes this summer. The class, titled: Foundations in Personal Finance, will meet five days a week from June 3 through June 28. Each class will be held from 9 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. at Miguel Juarez Middle School in Room 155.

Waukegan Community Unit School District #60’s annual Middle School Art Show is now underway at the Waukegan Public Library through Friday, May 17.

Congratulations to Mr. Trujillo Estrada at Greenwood Elementary School, who was recently named a winner in the student support personnel category as part of the Regional Office of Education’s annual Educator of the Year Awards program.

Waukegan Community Unit School District # 60 honored more than 30 employees, with combined service of more than 800 years, at the annual Board of Education Retirement and Recognition Dinner on Wednesday, May 8.

Waukegan High School honored more than 70 student-athletes during its annual Senior Sports Awards program on Tuesday, May 7. The awards ceremony recognized athletes in 27 sports for their achievements on the field and in the classroom.

Our District is excited to announce that beginning next year, all five Waukegan middle schools will be implementing a new schedule model as part of our Middle School Redesign. This is a model that has been tested at Lewis Middle School this year.

For the second year in a row, Waukegan High School’s Waukegan High School’s music program has finished its competition season as the 3rd ranked program in Illinois. Musicians in the band, choir, and orchestra combined for a 3rd place finish among all Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Class AA schools.

All 8th-grade promotion exercises for Waukegan Public Schools middle schools will once again be hosted at the Genesee Theatre in downtown Waukegan. The events are scheduled for May 20 and May 21.

District 60’s K-8 theater program, the Waukegan Performing Arts Company (WAUK-PAC) is holding auditions for its next production, Seusseical Jr. next month. Auditions will be held at Cooke Magnet School, 522 Belvidere Road, on Thursday, May 16, from 5 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. All K-8 students are welcome to audition.

Planning for Waukegan Public Schools’ 2024 Summer School programming is being finalized, and parents of eligible students should soon hear from their child’s school about summer options. Summer School for grades K-12 will run from June 3 to July 1.

Waukegan Community Unit School District # 60 is excited to announce that Whittier Elementary School has officially been authorized as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. Whittier last week earned IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) authorization, following a more than four-year process. The rigorous process of securing IB authorization underscores Whittier’s dedication to providing a globally-minded education that empowers students to become active, compassionate, and lifelong learners.

Parents new to District 60 looking to enroll their children in kindergarten for the 2024/25 school year still have time to reserve a time slot to complete the registration process during one of our upcoming New Kindergarten Registration events.

Waukegan Public Schools is excited to announce we will soon be rolling out a new facility scheduling and work order software. Later this summer FMX will officially replace SchoolDude. Our district-wide launch will take place in August.
