Board of Education Appoints Two New Student Board Members
Posted on 06/26/2024

The Waukegan Community Unit School District # 60 Board of Education appointed Waukegan High School students Melanie Rosales and Brianna Bravo to serve as its newest Student Board Members during its June 25 meeting.

New this year, two students were selected to serve in the position, as the Board desired to have one individual represent each Waukegan High School campus. Melanie, an incoming junior at the Washington Campus, and Brianna, an incoming sophomore at the Brookside Campus will serve in their roles through the 2024-2025 school year. They replace outgoing Student Board Member, Victor Hinojosa, who served for 18 months.

Melanie, a member of the class of 2026, is a staff sergeant in the JROTC. She plays violin in the orchestra and is in the JROTC color guard. Melanie was previously involved in the Ravinia Sistema program and the drill team. She is looking forward to working with her classmates to bring meaningful change and says one thing she’s interested in is helping to spread positivity among her peers.

Brianna is a member of the Class of 2027. She is also a musician who plays violin in the school’s orchestra, as well as with the District’s Mariachi Estrella group. Brianna is a member of the school’s volleyball and soccer teams and is a JROTC student. Outside of school, she dances with the Ballet Folklorico. Brianna says she is interested in working to improve the climate of her school and is looking forward to learning more about how a school board functions.

As Student Board Members, Melanie and Brianna will be given time on each School Board agenda to speak regarding student concerns, curriculum, and activities. They will act as liaisons between the students and the school board, gather student concerns and celebrations in a variety of ways, and help communicate important information from the School Board to students.

2022: Joanna Gutierrez

2021: Isam Hussaini
