Waukegan High School Junior Victor Hinojosa has again been selected to serve on the Illinois State Board of Education's Student Advisory Council (SAC) for the 2023-2024 school year. This is Victor’s second year on the advisory council.

A regular meeting of the Board of Education will be held on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at 7 p.m. for Open Session, and 6 p.m. for Closed Session. The meeting will be conducted in-person in the Lincoln Center Board Room, 1201 N. Sheridan Road. Closed Session will occur in Room 120.

Waukegan Community Unit School District # 60 was recently recognized by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) with the prestigious “Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting” (CAFR), for its comprehensive annual financial report for the fiscal year ending in June 2022.

A Special Closed Session Meeting of the Board of Education will be held on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, for the purpose of discussing negotiations and litigation. The meeting will be in Closed Session beginning at 6 p.m. in Room 120 at Lincoln Center, 1201 N. Sheridan Road. No official Board action will be taken at this meeting. The meeting will precede the Board's regular monthly committee meetings. On November 21, 2023, the regularly-scheduled Student Achievement and Operation Services Committee meetings will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Lincoln Center Board Room.

Waukegan Community Unit School District # 60 is seeking stakeholder feedback as we work to select knowledge-based curricula that align with the new Illinois Comprehensive Literacy Plan. The State’s Literacy Plan is designed to guide and unify knowledge-building literacy efforts across Illinois. Five Waukegan High School student musicians were recently chosen to participate in the Illinois Music Education Association District 7 Music Festivals.

Waukegan Community Unit School District No. 60 joins school districts across Illinois in celebrating School Board Members’ Day. Board Members’ Day is celebrated annually on November 15. The theme of this year’s event is “Learn Together. Lead Together.”

We have extended the deadline for students to apply to join the Superintendent's Student Advisory Commission. We want to thank those students who have shown interest and applied. The new deadline will be Sunday, November 26.

We hope this letter finds you well. This fall many of our families may have realized that student fees have been reinstated for the 2023-2024 school year, after being waived for the past three school years. This letter will help parents better understand the purpose of certain fees, how families qualify for fee waivers, how parents can pay for fees owed, and we will introduce a new program that will offer parents an option to reduce fees owed.

Our Family and Community Engagement (FACE) team will host an informational parent meeting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 16 at Whittier Elementary School, 901 Lewis Avenue. During the 90-minute meeting our team plans to share information about the department’s mission, goals, and upcoming initiatives. We will also share information on how you as a parent can get involved and help support your child's education both at school and at home.

Waukegan Public Schools is looking for former students to join us during our annual Guest Principal Day on December 4. We're hoping to attract a variety of grads from varying fields to serve as Guest Principals for this special day.

Waukegan High School students will perform an adaptation of the classic film Night of the Living Dead at the Trapp Auditorium on November 10-12.

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) released the annual Illinois School Report Card this week, which shows how schools and districts across the State are progressing on a wide range of educational goals. The Report Card offers a complete picture of student and school performance and provides the school community with an opportunity to reflect on last year’s strengths and discuss areas for continuous improvement. Waukegan Public Schools is conducting a survey to determine parent interest in enrolling their children in a two-way dual language program. A two-way program means students who are in the bilingual program as well as monolingual students can participate in a dual program to learn both English and Spanish.

Waukegan Community Unit School District # 60 schools are again participating in Professional Learning Days this school year. These days will allow for additional professional development opportunities for staff members, and will result in altered bell schedules on these days.

Waukegan Public Schools is excited to announce we will soon be rolling out a new facility scheduling and work order software. Later this summer FMX will officially replace SchoolDude. Our district-wide launch will take place in August.
