Winter has arrived more intensely than in past years, as we have already experienced several rounds of harsh weather. As we move further into the season, we would like to remind families of our district’s cold-weather policies and procedures to ensure the safety and well-being of all students. Sudden temperature drops and snow can create challenging conditions, and it is essential that families are aware of what to expect as we navigate the months ahead.
E-Learning Days
In cases of extreme cold or heavy snowfall, District 60 may close buildings and implement an E-Learning Day. During these days, students will receive virtual instruction, with lessons, assignments, and schedules communicated by schools and teachers.
Abbreviated Schedules
If weather conditions require adjustments, the District may announce late starts, early releases, or program cancellations. Generally, a late start means classes will begin approximately two hours later than usual, but will dismiss at normal times. View delayed start schedules here.
Notifications
Families will be informed of closures or schedule changes through the District website (www.wps60.org), automated calls, texts, and emails. Updates will also be posted on District social media (Facebook) and through Priority Mail 60. Sign up here.
Outdoor Activities
It is District policy not to allow students outside for recess or any other outdoor activities when temperatures drop below 10 degrees Fahrenheit, or when unsafe, windy, icy, or snowy conditions exist. If temperatures are below 20°F, students will be allowed to enter buildings upon arrival. Principals may also cancel outdoor activities at their discretion.
Dress Warmly
We encourage families to ensure children wear warm coats, gloves, hats, scarves, and boots when travelling to and from school. If your family needs assistance with winter clothing, please contact your school’s social worker or the Family and Community Engagement Department at [email protected].
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students safe and warm this winter season.
