Dear Families and Staff
As we prepare to close out the first week of Remote Learning Days in our district, we want to thank staff, parents and students for all of your hard work and attention during this newest chapter of instruction. All week we’ve seen many positive accounts about Waukegan students learning, and interacting with their teachers. It’s heartwarming to see this level of engagement with our new Remote Learning website.
We understand this entire process is new and, as a result, there may be many questions. Staff members have been working to answer those inquiries as they come in. Some are simple responses, and others may take more time as we seek guidance from the Illinois State Board of Education. The two most common questions we have received pertaining to Remote Learning involves student grades and attendance. Below are summaries of our responses on those topics.
Grading
Grading should be done with equity and support. The recommendations on grading are based upon the principle of no educational harm to any child (Pre-K through twelfth grade). The emphasis for schoolwork assigned, reviewed, and completed during the Remote Learning period is on learning, not on compliance. Grading should focus on the continuation of learning and prioritize connectedness and care for students and staff. All students should have the opportunity to redo, make up, or try again to complete, show progress, or attempt to complete work assigned prior to the remote learning period in that time frame. A student’s cumulative grade may improve during remote learning, but should not end lower than the student’s grade on March 13, 2020. During remote learning, incomplete assignments and assessments should be recorded as incomplete rather than 0. No “F or Failing” grades will be assigned during remote learning.
Attendance
It is of great importance that all students participate during these Remote Learning Days to continue their learning and not fall behind in their academic progress. Hours per day can vary from as little as 2 to as many as students are interested in engaging with the materials. Remote Learning Days count as student attendance days in the calculation of the school year. Individual student attendance on these days, however, will not be applied to the school's annual attendance percentage nor towards the student's absenteeism or truancy rate. Our Office of Student Outreach will conduct well-being checks for students who have not participated in three or more consecutive days of Remote Learning in order to determine if a student continues to reside in our district, lacks a device and access to the internet, or has physical and emotional health needs preventing them from participating during this time period. All well-being checks will be via call, email, and/or text.
Staff remain committed to assisting parents, students and their colleagues through this process. Our Remote Learning website features a frequently asked question section where answers will continue to be posted. Much of the successes this week would not have been possible without the dedication of staff in our buildings who worked to bring much-needed technology to our families. While students in grades 6-12 have been using their school-issued Chromebooks during this time, our 15 elementary schools spent the early part of this week distributing thousands of Chromebooks to our youngest students who lack technology at home. To meet the needs of students and families further, printed copies of assignments are being completed and will be available next week.
This week also marked the start of our new neighborhood meal distribution. On Tuesday and Thursday we distributed more than 27,800 meals at more than 80 locations around the community. We will be continuing this initiative while our schools remain closed. A complete list of distribution sites, and schedules can be found here. We again want to thank our Transportation & Child Nutrition department and our many volunteers for their efforts to make this possible, as well as Preferred Meals and Illinois Central, for their partnership.
In closing, we wish to remind everyone that tomorrow, April 10, is a non-instructional day in our District in recognition of Good Friday. All buildings are closed tomorrow, and students and staff are not expected to engage in remote learning. Learning will continue on Monday, April 13.

Mientras nos preparamos para cerrar la primera semana de los Días de Aprendizaje a Distancia en nuestro distrito, queremos agradecer al personal, padres y estudiantes por todo su arduo trabajo y atención durante este nuevo capítulo de instrucción. Durante toda la semana hemos visto muchos informes positivos sobre el aprendizaje de los estudiantes de Waukegan y la interacción con sus maestros. Es conmovedor ver este nivel de compromiso con nuestro nuevo sitio web de Aprendizaje a Distancia.
Entendemos que todo este proceso es nuevo y, como resultado, puede haber muchas preguntas. Los miembros del personal han estado trabajando para responder esas preguntas a medida que se presentan. Algunas son respuestas simples y otras pueden tomar más tiempo a medida que buscamos orientación de la Mesa Directiva de Educación del Estado de Illinois. Las dos preguntas más comunes que hemos recibido sobre el Aprendizaje a Distancia involucran calificaciones y asistencia de los estudiantes. Calificación

Asistencia

Los Días de Aprendizaje a Distancia cuentan como días de asistencia de los estudiantes en el cálculo del año escolar. Sin embargo, la asistencia individual de los estudiantes en estos días no se aplicará al porcentaje de asistencia anual de la escuela ni a la tasa de ausentismo o ausentismo escolar del estudiante. Nuestra Oficina de Alcance Estudiantil llevará a cabo revisiones de bienestar para los estudiantes que no hayan participado en tres o más días consecutivos de Aprendizaje a Distancia para determinar si un estudiante continúa residiendo en nuestro distrito, carece de un dispositivo y acceso a Internet, o tiene necesidades de salud física y emocional que les impiden participar durante este período de tiempo. Todos las revisiones de bienestar se realizarán por llamada, correo electrónico y/o mensaje de texto.

Gran parte de los éxitos de esta semana no hubiera sido posible sin la dedicación del personal de nuestros edificios que trabajaron para brindar la tecnología que tanto necesitan nuestras familias. Para terminar, deseamos recordarle a todos que mañana, 10 de abril, es un día sin instrucción en nuestro Distrito en reconocimiento de Viernes Santo. Todos los edificios estarán cerrados mañana, y no se espera que los estudiantes y el personal participen en el aprendizaje a distancia. El aprendizaje continuará el lunes, 13 de abril.
