Drill TeamEven after more than 100 years, Waukegan High School’s JROTC program is still setting new program milestones.

Following a formal JROTC Program of Accreditation (JPA) inspection last month, Waukegan’s nationally ranked program learned it had been designated as an “Honor Unit with Gold Star Distinction,” which is the highest standing a JROTC Program can receive. The program earned a score of 98.5 out of a possible 100, which is the highest any squad has received in the program’s 103-year history.

Since 2005, the WHS’s JROTC program has been accredited by a national agency known as AdvancED. As an accredited Special Purpose Program, every three years the squad is inspected to ensure its meeting AdvancED’s Standards for Quality. The 568-cadet JROTC program had been working to prepare for the inspection since last summer. The inspection covers every facet of the JROTC program, including its work in the classroom, the school and community.

“I salute these dedicated cadets who stepped up and went above and beyond what was asked of them, and the commitment and professionalism of our Army Instructors is like nowhere else,” said Senior Army Instructor, CSM Randy Thomas. “I am extremely proud to be a part of an awesome team here at Waukegan High School.”
