Washington Elementary School teacher, Ms. Erica Jacobo is among the most recently recognized National Board Certified Teachers by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).

Last month, Ms. Jacobo, a 3rd grade dual language teacher at Washington Elementary School, learned she was among a select number of educators across the country to earn NBPTS certification. Ms. Jacobo has taught in District 60 for six years, spending all of her tenure at Washington.

National certification is a special commendation for educators excelling in their fields. Nationally, 125,000 teachers have achieved NBPTS certification.  The prestigious designation follows a demanding, multi-year process made up of four components.

“I am always looking for ways to improve my craft and felt like National Board Certification would push me to do so,” said Ms. Jacobo. “National Board Certification is important because it pushes teachers to get to know their students on a deeper level and really analyze their craft. Through this process I learned a lot about my students and myself.”

Ms. Jacobo began the process in 2017, and submitted her final components in May 2019.

“When I found out that I achieved certification, I was overcome with emotion. After two years of hard work I had finally achieved what I set out to do,” she said.

In addition to her work in the classroom, Ms. Jacobo serves as a mentor to new teachers, is a WIN instructional technology trainer, and a member of her school's Instructional Leadership Team.
