Carman-Buckner Elementary School will host a Celebration of Life in honor of one of its namesakes on Saturday, December 14. The ceremony will celebrate the life, legacy and impact of Ms. Isabelle Buckner, a longtime Carman-Buckner principal, and will be held at the Helmholz Avenue school beginning at 11 a.m.

Ms. Buckner, who passed away earlier this fall in California, was a longtime educator in Waukegan, and served for many years as Principal at what was then known as Carman School. She made history as the city’s first African American female principal, and was heavily involved in several local organizations, including the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and the Uptown Lions Club.

The December 14 ceremony will feature several speakers, and tributes from those who were close to Ms. Buckner. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and all community members are welcome to join in the celebration of Ms. Buckner’s life.
