District Internet Connectivity

District Internet Connectivity
Posted on 10/18/2019
Dear WPS60 Community,

In recent weeks District 60 has experienced several instances of intermittent Internet network connection. These outages have affected the Internet connectivity district wide, and have occurred for a variety of reasons outside of our control. We know the inconsistent Internet this month has caused frustrations in classrooms and offices. The lack of reliable Internet has affected testing and instruction, and it’s significantly hindered our staff and students' abilities to complete some day-to-day tasks. For this, we want to apologize, and ensure everyone that we are working diligently on these ongoing issues.

The connectivity issues have been difficult to corral because they have been caused by a confluence of unexpected, and unrelated instances, including:
A garbage truck on Sheridan Road struck a pole that contained a key connection
Construction crews working near Lincoln Center accidentally cut an underground AT&T fiber optic cable
Most recently, our network and firewall have been overwhelmed on four different days by sophisticated cyber attacks, some of which appear to be originating overseas.

We have been in constant communication with AT&T about these disruptions, and we do not believe any of our data has been compromised. Additionally, we have added additional cyber-security filters. Furthermore, we are in the process of adding a second Internet Service Provider (ISP) to address future network communication issues.

That said, we too are frustrated by the events of the last several weeks. A reliable Internet connection at work and school should be expected, and our staff is working to resolve these issues as they arise, and to minimize any further disruptions. Thank you for your continued understanding and patience.
