Lights to Be Added at Weiss Field

Waukegan High School’s Weiss Field stadium will see new, permanent lights installed this summer, following an approval by Waukegan City Council on July 1.

The City Council voted Monday evening to approve a Conditional Use Permit for lighting at Weiss Field. The Council vote was the final hurdle to bring permanent lighting to the stadium. On June 25, the Board of Education voted to approve approximately $486,000 to install new lights at the field and the parking lots. The cost includes a $361,814 bid for field lights, and $74,186 for parking lot lights along Lewis Avenue and Monroe Street. The project also includes costs for 10 percent contingency and advertising.

Weiss Field is currently the only high school field in the North Suburban Conference, and the only public high school field in Lake County, without lights for nighttime use. With the addition of lights, WHS will this fall begin to host a select number of athletic contests and band events in the evening hours, with a maximum of roughly 30 events planned each year. Events will include: football games, soccer games and track meets, as well as marching band events, and the annual WHS graduation.

“We’re thrilled to finally be able to host nighttime events at Weiss. This is something our athletes, coaches and the community have waited a long time for,” said WHS Athletic Director, Ms. Colette Erbach. “Adding lights is a major step toward providing equitable facilities for our athletes.”

As part of the proposal, four 80-foot posts will be erected outside of the Weiss Field track. The posts will feature large LED lights, which will focus lights directly on the field and track area, with very minimal spillover outside of the playing area. Additionally, six lights on 15-foot poles will be added to Monroe Street parking lot, and four lights on 30-foot poles will be added to the Lewis Avenue parking lot.
