Waukegan Public School District 60

Welcome from the Superintendent

Waukegan Public School District 60 serves approximately 17,000 students in grades kindergarten through twelve. Located on Lake Michigan just south of the Wisconsin border, District 60 is composed of twenty-four individual schools, including three preschool sites, one kindergarten center, fourteen elementary schools, five middle schools, and a high school program divided between three buildings. The student body of the district is rich in diversity with most of our students being Hispanic (70%), 22% African-American, 7% Caucasian, and 1% of other ethnic groups.

Our main goal is to help each of our students succeed in school and ultimately their lives. There are gifted and talented programs for those children who qualify. On the other hand, there are bilingual and special education programs for all students with special needs. Additionally, there are after-school and summer programs designed to help students meet some of the challenging learning situations, while also affording them the opportunity to participate in interesting and fun extensions to classroom learning. Our high school activities programs are numerous and include sports, clubs, and a wide range of other social activities. Because we are one of the largest school districts in the State of Illinois, it is possible to provide a very comprehensive academic- and activities-oriented program.

The district is one of the largest employers in the area having nearly 2,000 employees who work in a wide variety of jobs as teachers, administrators, para-professionals, custodial and maintenance workers, bus drivers, food service workers, and others in various positions. The district is fortunate to have a diverse, caring, talented, and effective work force. We are always seeking people interested in becoming part of the Waukegan School family.

It is an honor for me to serve as the Superintendent of this great school district. There is an interest on the part of the staff, Board of Education, parents, and community to improve and provide the very best for each of our students. One of the things about this district is the excellent potential that exists here. Please be encouraged to contact school or district staff whenever we can be of assistance.
