Press Release: 01-17-2012

Waukegan High School’s boys’ basketball team is continuing its fight against breast cancer later this month with its annual Pink-Out game and pep rally.

The basketball team will host its annual Pink-Out game at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 27 against Evanston Township High School, where fans will be encouraged to purchase and wear pink t-shirts promoting breast cancer awareness. Leading up to the game, Waukegan High School students will again take part in a special pep rally with students from the Special Education District of Lake County.

The team’s crusade against breast cancer dates back to the 2009/2010 season, when team members began wearing pink t-shirts during warm-ups on their way to a third place finish in the Illinois High School Association State Finals.

The Pink-Out game will be held at Waukegan’s Washington Campus, 1011 Washington Street. A portion of the proceeds from the shirts will go to the American Cancer Society. The Pink-Out game is being organized by the Waukegan Basketball Parents Association.

On January 26 WHS students will again be performing a unique pep rally for the students of Laremont School in Gages Lake. Laremont is part of the Special Education District of Lake County (SEDOL). Laremont School serves students with severe to profound mental impairment and/or multiple disabilities. These students are from SEDOL's 35 member school districts located in Lake County. The basketball team, pep band, cheerleaders, pom pom squad and drill team will all visit Laremont at 10 a.m. for a special event with Laremont students. T-shirt sales proceeds from the pep rally will also be donated to cancer research.

“Last year’s pep rally was such a highlight for the students at Laremont. They had so much fun listening to the band and meeting the players and cheerleaders from Waukegan. It really was a special event,” said Mr. Jim Ross, the vocational facilitator at Laremont, and member of the Waukegan Basketball Parents Association.

T-shirts for the Pink-Out game are now available at both the Brookside and Washington campus book stores. Additionally, the $10 t-shirts will be available for purchase during the boys’ basketball game against Glenbrook North on Friday evening, January 20, at the Washington Campus gym (Dog Pound).
