Press Release: 04-05-2012

Waukegan Community Unit School District # 60 is partnering with Dr. Patricia Canessa of Latino Health in Chicago, to present two Parent/Guardian Educational Workshops in April, focusing on aspects of stress management and managing adolescence development.

The Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee will host Dr. Canessa on Wednesday, April 11 for a session titled “Stress Management.” Dr. Canessa will discuss common stress factors that parents face, as well as stress management techniques. The workshop, which will be conducted in English and Spanish, will run from 6:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. on April 11 at Glen Flora Elementary School, 1110 Chestnut Avenue.

On Monday, April 23, Dr. Canessa will conduct a workshop titled “Adolescence: Time of Growth, Development and Risk Taking.” The workshop is targeted for parents of Waukegan Public School students in grades 6-12. The session, which will be conducted in English and Spanish, will focus on preventing teenage pregnancy. The workshop will run from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on April 23 at the District 60 Welcome Center, 742 W. Greenwood Avenue.

Both events are free to parents/guardians of Waukegan Public Schools students. The workshop topics were determined based on a parental survey that asked parents and guardians what topics they would like to learn more about. The workshops will be held periodically over the next several months, with various community organizations presenting on topics of expertise. Dates and topics of future workshops will be announced as they become known at www.wps60.org.
