The Waukegan Community Unit School District # 60 Board of Education met for a special meeting on September 1 to discuss a handful of issues, including the District’s busing guidelines.

During the meeting the Board voted to amend the current busing guidelines for kindergarten and first grade students. Under the new guidelines, all kindergarten and first grade students who live more than a half mile from their school will receive busing. The additional busing will cost District 60 an estimated $525,000.

Board members said during the meeting that they will continue to evaluate busing guidelines, and another meeting to addresses the community’s concerns will likely be announced in the near future.

In other action, the Board of Education approved an indemnification and reimbursement agreement with the City of Waukegan for bonfire and homecoming parade activities. Waukegan High School’s Homecoming bonfire will be on Wednesday, September 21 at Waukegan’s lakefront. The Homecoming parade will be on Saturday, September 24.

The Board of Education on September 1, also voted to approve the appointment of 54 employees.
