Cooke Student Honored in National Art Contest

Press Release: 01-12-2012

Cooke Magnet School second grader Gabriela Hernandez has been named a top 10 finisher in Scholastic Book Club’s Magic School Bus Create-a-Cover contest.

Gabriela was notified of her award upon returning to school from Winter Break this week. She was one of 10 winners from across the country. Gabriela’s masterpiece features the Magic School bus in Las Vegas, with a prominent playing card theme.

The Magic School Bus is a popular children’s book series that takes readers on adventures all over the world, and often into outer space. The contest asked students to draw the Magic School Bus in different locations.

The artwork was done as part of a class project in Ms. Julie Ahern’s class. Ms. Ahern encouraged her students to enter the Scholastic contest after one of her students won a similar contest last year.

“The entire Cooke family is obviously very proud of Gabriela. When you consider that thousands of students across the country enter this contest each year, it is quite remarkable that we have had two students win prizes in consecutive years,” said Ms. Ahern.

As a top 10, winner Gabriela will receive a prize pack that includes a science kit, DVDs and an assortment of books.
