The Board of Education for Waukegan Community Unit School District # 60 met for a special meeting on January 10 to discuss various aspects of the $37.7 million Capital Development Board (CDB) grant project. The Board specifically addressed items related to the equipment and furnishings of new classrooms.
The Board of Education voted to approve classroom recommendations that were developed by the District’s Academic Design Committee. The recommendations include specifics for classroom activity zones, finish types, casework, furniture and technology. The classroom recommendations serve as a guide for the major components in each new classroom and provide continuity, equity and direction throughout the project. In a follow up to a discussion from last month, the Board of Education Board agreed to enter into an engagement of legal services with Mr. Montel Gayles, an attorney with Hinshaw & Culbertson, who has Disadvantaged Business Enterprise expertise. Mr. Gayles will assist the District with minority hiring and local participation goals related to the CDB project.
Prior to adjournment, it was announced that a Construction Trade Workshop will be held from on Monday, February 13 at the Brookside Campus of Waukegan High School, 2325 Brookside Avenue. The workshop is tentatively scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Capital Development Board Grant will help add a total of 116 classrooms to District 60 schools. Schools slated for classroom additions include: Washington Elementary and Whittier Elementary, each with 16 new classrooms; Glen Flora Elementary with 12 classrooms, and eight classrooms at Carmen-Buckner Elementary, Greenwood Elementary, North Elementary, Clearview Elementary, Glenwood Elementary, McCall Elementary, Hyde Park Elementary, Little Fort Elementary and Oakdale Elementary.
